Often times, the title “hero” conjures a mental image of a muscular individual, clad in shield and cape. But heroes come in many shapes and sizes, including the form of a seven-year-old boy. But what makes a child a hero? For William Shultz, it was fighting through pediatric brain cancer and, through his struggle, leaving behind a legacy dedicated to saving other children’s lives.
William Schultz was diagnosed at age five and sadly passed in 2017 due to treatment complications. While William is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through the William's Warriors Superhero fund, which was created to fund research to help improve the lives of children with cancer.
About William’s Warriors Superhero Fund
The Superhero Fund fights again childhood cancer, supporting research in the laboratory of world-renowned expert on medulloblastoma Robert Wechsler-Reya, Ph.D., SBP scientist, who is dedicated to translating his research into therapies that can improve the lives of children living with cancer.Funds generated are also donated to William’s Heart Works, which provides art supplies to children undergoing treatment. Doing so allows children to express themselves through art and articulate their emotions, a tactic used frequently by William during his difficult treatment process. Any family that has a child starting cancer treatment can visit the organization’s website and request a Creative Care Package.
How NYCM Insurance is getting involved
William’s cause was first brought to NYCM Insurance by Field Investigator Amanda Scaturro, whose son was best friends with William.“My son was in class with William every year since Kindergarten at Blue Point Elementary and they were good friends. They loved trading Pokémon cards together, building with Legos and superheroes.”
Amanda has been actively involved with the organization for three years and was touched by NYCM’s donation.
“Giving is not just about money. Whether it’s $5 or $50; it’s the effort, support and caring that matter. I’m so proud to be part of the NYCM team and appreciate all their efforts and contributions.”
This year, NYCM Insurance is proud to be a Bronze-level supporter for the “William’s Chalk to Walk” event, taking place on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Blue Point Nature Preserve. Aside from sponsorship, NYCM’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) team has also been undergoing fundraising efforts leading up to the walk.
“The SIU team is excited about supporting this cause; not only because Amanda is one of our teammates, but because NYCM really encourages their employees to get involved in the community.” Said SUI team member, Sarah McIntosh-Posson.
“I absolutely love my job, the people I work with, and what the company stands for. I am part of a team, but also part of a culture that is putting people first.”
