Take your spring cleaning a step further with these home maintenance tips
While we’re all familiar with the term “spring cleaning,” there are many important projects that don’t necessarily come to mind as we prepare for warmer weather and an increased amount of rain. This spring, use the change of season as a reminder to take care of some easily overlooked projects, and maintain the look and safety of your home.
Here are some ideas to get you started:
Clear out the gutters: Throw on a pair of gloves and grab the ladder! Remove larger debris with your hands or a trowel. To clean out smaller items, flush the gutters with a hose, starting at the opposite end of the downspout.
Clean the dryer vent: Despite popular belief, your lint trap does not catch all of the lint and debris generated from drying your clothes. Clean out your dryer vent at least once a year to reduce the risk of a home fire.
Test smoke alarms: Use the change of season as a reminder to test all of your smoke alarms. Replace batteries as needed or replace units with 10-year alarms that don’t require you to change the batteries each year. This procedure can be done around daylight saving time and will only take you a matter of minutes and could potentially save lives.
Have your chimney inspected: Think ahead! Schedule to have a professional inspect your chimney for damage caused during the winter months and do a thorough cleaning so you’re prepared for the next time you want to use it.
Check your power equipment: Your lawn mower and weed trimmers have been sitting idle for a while. Make sure you clean your equipment and check your blades before using.
