Summer Safety Series - Your Guide to a Successful Camping Trip

Planning your next camping adventure? With public parks, and a variety of camping destinations, living in New York State has its perks. Whether you’re a wilderness scout or a new camper, use these tips this summer to guide a successful camping trip.

Plan Ahead

Before determining your destination, think about what activities you hope to do while on your trip. Fishing, canoeing, biking and hiking are great activities that can be done at many destinations. However, if you’re looking for something more adventurous like rock climbing, this may determine where you end up.

Choose a Destination

Based on the goals of your camping trip, choose your destination. New York State has some of the best campgrounds that you, your friends and your family can enjoy. Be sure to do your research to ensure the campground can accommodate your party and has the essentials you may need (tent-friendly, amenities, outdoor recreation, etc). These can vary depending on public versus private grounds.

Gather Your Gear

Packing for a camping trip can be tough but, we made it easy for you. We’ve created a Camping Checklist equipped with everything you’ll need for your upcoming camping trip. Click below to download. Remember to pack the “essentials”, any personal care items you may need, and of course, items from the kitchen to make your camping trip complete.

Hit the Road

You’ve created the itinerary, chosen your destination, packed your gear and are ready to hit the road. When traveling, map out your route beforehand using your phone or GPS system. It is also recommended to print directions ahead of time depending on your destination, you may be able to do some sight-seeing along the way. Check out popular tourist destinations around the area and see what could make a great addition to your trip.

Make it Fun

Whether you’re on the road or at your destination, remember you’re on this adventure to have fun. Road trip games make travel time go by faster and more enjoyable for those accompanying you. You’ll also want to remember to take pictures to capture the memorable moments made along the way and later, share them with your family and friends.
At the end of the day, gather around your perfectly built campfire, make some s’mores and enjoy.
