As much as we’d all love to celebrate Mother’s Day by taking mom out to
her favorite restaurant for brunch, treating her to a show or a visit to her
favorite museum, or hand-delivering a thoughtful gift, we also know that’s not
always an option. Whether you live far apart or are practicing social distancing, the reality is
that we can’t always be with our loved ones for every holiday.
The good news is, there are still plenty of
ways to celebrate mom and make her feel special, even when celebrating from
afar. Check out some ideas below:
Send a heartfelt card
Pick out a card that you know your mom will
appreciate and write a special message inside. The more personalized the card,
the better! Surprise mom by filling the card with confetti so she will have a
laugh when she opens it. If you have children, encourage them to make their own
cards for grandma and decorate them with drawings, stamps and stickers. Mail
them all together for a mailbox full of love and well wishes.
Give mom a call
If you can’t be together physically, then pick
up the phone. Or better yet, video chat so that you can interact face-to-face.
Wish her a happy Mother’s Day and check in to see how she’s doing. If your mom
is also a grandma, ask your children to join in. The more the
merrier! If you opt for a virtual call and feel like getting creative, you may
even try having a virtual tea party or brunch together.
Support her favorite cause
Does your mother have a favorite cause or charity that she likes to
support? Make a donation in her name. Many organizations will provide an email
certificate once you have made your donation. Send this along to your mom for a
heartfelt Mother’s Day surprise.
Say it with flowers
Most moms have a favorite flower or spring bouquet. Call your mom’s
local florist and have them deliver a bouquet of her favorite buds. She’ll love
the thoughtfulness of the gift and will be sure to think of you and your
relationship every time she looks at the flowers. Aside from delighting your
mom, you’re also supporting a local business - win, win!
Send her treats
Who doesn’t appreciate fresh baked goodies? If
you’re handy in the kitchen, whip up a batch of your
mom’s favorite cookies, brownies or muffins and mail them to her. Consider
including a bag of her favorite coffee to pair with the sweet treats. Not much
of a baker? Have no fear! Call her favorite bakery and have a batch of her
favorite goodies delivered or buy her a gift card so that she can drop by when
she feels like a pick-me-up treat.
Start planning your next visit
If you’re unable to be together due to
distance, find time in your calendar when you think you’ll be able to visit your mom in-person. Give her
a call to share the news and spend some time planning what you two will do
together during your visit.
Being away from family during any holiday is
difficult. But by getting creative, there are still plenty of ways to show mom
just how much she means to you on Mother’s Day.
