How to Virtually Give Back This Holiday Season

Use these Tips to Give Back this Holiday Season!

With the holiday season upon us, you may be wondering how you can give back while social distancing. Many have supported their communities and beyond throughout the year, as needs rose due to the impact of COVID-19. It’s relieving to know that there are numerous ways to give back to both our local and global communities and that much can be done safely from your home (pandemic approved!). Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

Donate

This idea may seem obvious but is worth mentioning! Donating funds and supplies to a charity or organization you believe in and trust is the perfect start.  Do you have a local animal sanctuary or displacement shelter in need of supplies for the winter? Maybe consider working with a COVID -19 relief fund or a healthcare facility in your local community.

Volunteer Online

Researching how you can volunteer online is a good way to find opportunities that might be a good fit for you and your family.  There are many companies that allow you to volunteer online after the training they provide. Options can include becoming a crisis hotline counselor, a translator, or even a video/pen pal to someone in a nursing home in need of a friend.

Organize a Food Drive

Organizing a food drive is a lot less daunting than it may sound, although it does take a bit of coordination.  You will need to reach out to your selected food bank or shelter to discuss details about dates and times for them to pick up donations if you are not able to deliver them yourself. Be sure to ask about what types of food they need so that you can provide that information in your promotion. Once the details are finalized it’s time to promote your “event”.  Try setting up a Facebook Event Page or the equivalent on your chosen platform. Be sure to be specific with the details about when and where donations can be dropped off.

Show Your Gratitude

A simple “thank you” or message of gratitude can mean the world to someone in your life or community. Think of calling the people you are grateful for and letting them know you appreciate them. You might also consider making “thank you” signs for essential workers to place in your yard or ordering lunch to be delivered to your local fire station or healthcare facility. Think outside the box!

Shop in Your Community This Holiday Season

Consider supporting the many small businesses who may have been affected this year by supporting them during the holiday season. Many small businesses also have online shops where you can do your holiday gift shopping if you prefer to shop virtually. Shopping locally will not only help the business owner but can help boost your local economy and often will provide you with a more unique selection.
Giving back this holiday season may look different but is still achievable and you can truly make a difference in your community and beyond, while keeping yourself and others safe!
